“Social participation and involvement in decision-making processes at different levels of self-government are the cornerstone of democracy and civic attitude.”

An essential element of the functioning of democratic countries is multi-level governance and decentralisation – cooperation between central, regional and local authorities, as well as active involvement in this process of other partners: social organisations, citizens, businesses, etc.

As Sean Mueller, Swiss researcher of political processes, has written, decentralisation is important for social legitimacy of a political system. Its strength is demonstrated, for example, by citizens’ involvement in public life and activities supporting their own communities.

My scientific work is devoted to social participation in the context of multi-level governance. My research is focused on the analysis of metropolitan policies (e.g. participatory budget) and activities of local and sub-local self-governments in Polish towns and cities.

I am an assistant professor in the Institute of Research on Political and Social Activity at the University of Wrocław. In the subject of Political Science I run classes on Polish political history, decentralisation and local self-government, as well as the importance of evaluation in the implementation of public policies.

I always try to encourage students to take active part in classes, ask questions and formulate their own conclusions. Independent thinking is the starting point for understanding and knowledge.
