About the programme

Would you like to understand processes of European integration, the functioning of EU institutions and impact of public policies prepared by them on individual member states? Are you interested in the European political geography, the EU’s relations with other regions of the world and internal security? Do you want to understand the most important challenges currently faced by Europe, such as growing Euro-scepticism, economic inequalities, problems of migration policy or climate challenges?

The two-year Master’s programme in European Studies in the Chair of European Studies of the University of Wrocław will equip you with extensive knowledge of the EU functioning, its institutions, legislative processes and regional policy. You will learn to analyse EU legal acts and to forecast their impact on the local environment.

You will be up-to-date with the most important events in the European international area. You will understand decision-making processes at the European level and position of individual member states in the EU political mosaic. You will also gain practical skills in the scope of project management, obtaining European funds and business psychology.

Equipped with such competencies, you will be able to take active part in the international debate on the functioning of the EU and to make essential contributions to the reflection on further development of the European community.

Graduating from the European Studies speciality will give you opportunities to work in public institutions both at the national and international level. You will be an attractive candidate qualified for work in governmental and non-governmental organisations, international trade, business, multinational corporations and media. Graduates of this speciality are specialists, journalists, analysts, experts and even politicians, all of whom are highly valued on the market.

About the Institute

The European Studies speciality is offered by the Chair of European Studies of the University of Wrocław. Our Chair is one of the largest scientific and research institutes of this kind in Poland. We are part of the University of Wrocław, which last year was the winner of the “Excellence Initiative – Research University” competition organised by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

We offer the possibility to attend classes run by outstanding experts, both researchers and practitioners, in such fields as political science, international relations, law, economics, history, sociology, philosophy, administration, migration studies or security. Students are supported in conducting research and pursuing their own interests. They will also have individual consultations with lecturers and support in planning and developing their careers.

Candidate’s profile

You are interested in issues connected with the European integration, EU functioning and the impact of EU policies on individual member states. You have graduated from such Bachelor’s programmes as political science, European studies, international relations, law, economics, administration, philological studies or another related speciality.

You have a good command of English (level B2) and have a certificate confirming your skills (IELTS score of 5.5 – 6, TOEFL score of 550 or other exam; this requirement does not apply to candidates who completed an English-language Bachelor Programme or English is their native language).

The European Studies programme constitutes two-year supplementary Master’s degree studies. It is open to Polish citizens, citizens of other member states of the European Union and non-EU candidates. There are no age limits.

The European Studies programme offers one speciality – EU POLITICS.

Curriculum

The European Studies programme focuses on exploring the European Union functioning in the context of regional policy and public management. Its purpose is to equip students with extensive knowledge of the European community operation and with skills necessary to analyse the EU regulations and public policies. Students take part in workshops, seminars and discussions with experts.

The study programme comprises courses on history and European integration theory, international relations in the EU, regional development, EU law, functioning of EU institutions, internal security, foreign and economic policy and key challenges faced currently by the European Union. Students spend one of the semesters abroad within the Erasmus, ISEP and CEEPUS programmes. Education ends with the submission and defence of an MA thesis.

Workshops, internships, conferences

Students of European Studies have the opportunity to participate in international student exchanges and foreign internships within the Erasmus+ programme as well as numerous bilateral agreements with world-class universities. Each student has a scholarship guaranteed under the Erasmus+ programme.

Students may also take part in summer schools organised by the University of Wrocław and other European universities, as well as in international scientific conferences organised by universities and professional organisations. They may participate in lectures and classes run by lecturers visiting our university within the Visiting Professors programme and in activities of student scientific organisations.

In the inter-semester period, they have the opportunity to do an internship in international companies operating on the local market (Credit Suisse, UBS, IBM, Google, LG, Toyota, Volkswagen, Lufthansa, Daimler, Amazon and many others), organisations (e.g. the representation of the European Parliament, diplomatic representations, commercial and economic chambers, etc.) or think tanks.

Diploma

After graduating from the European Studies speciality at the Chair of European Studies of the University of Wrocław, you will obtain a Master’s diploma in the scope of European Studies, EU Regional Policy speciality.
